Description

Needle roller bearings are a specialized class of cylindrical roller bearings characterized by their long, thin rolling elements, where the length-to-diameter ratio typically exceeds four-to-one. This unique geometry allows them to support high radial load capacities while maintaining an incredibly low profile, making them indispensable in applications with severe space or weight constraints. Available in several configurations—including drawn cup versions for economical, compact housing fits and solid machined rings for heavy-duty requirements—these bearings are commonly found in automotive transmissions, small engines, and precision power tools. By offering a larger contact surface area than standard ball bearings, they provide superior rigidity and efficiency, often running directly on a hardened shaft to further reduce the assembly's overall footprint and manufacturing complexity.

Drawn Cup Needle Roller Bearings FAQ 's

Frequently asked questions about the Drawn Cup Needle Roller Bearings

What makes a "Drawn Cup" bearing different from others?

The "drawn cup" refers to the outer ring, which is made of thin, hardened sheet steel that has been stamped and formed (drawn) rather than machined from a solid piece. This design allows for an extremely thin cross-section. They are designed to be press-fitted into a housing, which then provides the necessary structural support for the thin outer ring.

Do I need to buy an inner ring for these bearings?

Not usually. To save space, drawn cup needle bearings are designed to run directly on the shaft. However, this requires the shaft to be hardened (typically HRC 58-64) and precision-ground to act as the inner raceway. If your shaft is soft or cannot be ground to a high finish, you must purchase a separate Inner Ring (IR) to slide onto the shaft.

Can I measure the outer diameter (OD) before installation?

No. This is a common mistake. Because the outer cup is so thin, it is not perfectly round until it is pressed into a precision-machined housing. If you use a micrometer on a drawn cup bearing sitting on a desk, the reading will be inaccurate. The bearing only achieves its final dimensions and "roundness" once it is properly installed.

How should these bearings be installed?

These bearings are delicate until installed. You should follow these rules:

  • Use a Press: Always use an arbor press and a specialized mounting dolly. Never hammer the bearing, as you will deform the thin steel cup.
  • Identify the Stamped Side: The side with the part number (the stamped side) is thicker. You must apply the installation force only to this stamped face.
  • Avoid Shoulders: Do not press the bearing against a shoulder in the housing unless specifically designed for it, as this can crush the thin wall.
What is the difference between HK and BK series?

These are the two most common designations for drawn cup bearings:

  • HK (Open Ends): The bearing is open on both sides, allowing a shaft to pass completely through it. This is the standard choice for most through-shaft applications.
  • BK (Closed End): One end of the cup is closed off. These are used at the end of a shaft to seal the assembly, protect the rotating shaft end, and prevent lubricant from leaking out of the housing.
